Weekly Inspirer: Identifying Your Inspiration
9th August 2012

As the Olympic circus gets ready to pack up its tent and its competitors go home, we ask what is their inspiration - and what is yours?
It's been an amazing two weeks at the Olympic Games. Filled with highs and lows, tears and joy, drama and humour, we have seen the great spectacle of human aspiration played out against a magnificent backdrop in the Olympic Park.
So what makes those athletes dedicate years of their life to a dream? Is it just about getting that medal, or is about more than that?
From the 16 year-old gymnasts who are experiencing their very first Olympic games to the 71-year old horserider taking part once again, every person has their own story of what drew them here.
For many Japanese contestants this year, the disasters that hit Japan over the last few years are certainly part of the inspiration.
Being able to show that their country is back on its feet after a tsunami and a nuclear disaster reveals that the human spirit is never crushed.
For others their inspiration will come from simpler things. From doing the best they can for family and loved ones, for example.
While sometimes it is about the small things in life, at other times inspiration is about the very big things - like freedom and equality. This year, for the first time ever, Saudi Arabia has allowed women to represent their country. How must these women feel, at the vanguard of representing their country and their sex? They will be a huge inspiration to their countywomen.
For many, their inspiration has come from that big idea, patriotism.
In these amazing two weeks there has been heartache, and amazing joy. Some are leaving in the knowledge that they will be back to do better, try harder and succeed next time around, while others will be making their last visit to the games.
But in every case, with every athlete, you are seeing something and someone absolutely amazing.
Just as this year's Olympic cauldron was made from many smaller pieces, these athletes have come together to make something greater than the sum of their parts.
Each has their personal inspirations, but they make something bigger because of it.
Ask yourself - what is your inspiration? And what would you do to honour it, to realise your dream?
Only by asking such questions can you ever hope to become the best you can be. Your future awaits!
Bye for now,
